Winter on the Waters: Flamingos of the Jawai Reservoir

The Seasonal Transformation
As November brings crisp morning breezes across the Aravalli hills, the landscape of Bera and Jawai undergoes a dramatic metamorphosis. The blue catchment waters of the Jawai Dam and surrounding village lakes—anchored by monolithic granite rocks—welcome one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles: the arrival of thousands of migratory birds.
Chief among these seasonal visitors are the Greater and Lesser Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus and Phoeniconaias minor). Traveling across continental flight corridors from the salt pans of the Rann of Kutch and Central Asia, these elegant waders turn the tranquil blue waters into vibrant ribbons of rose, crimson, and blush pink.
The Geometry of Feeding
Against the stark, golden granite backdrop of Jawai, flamingos present a study in balance and synchronized grace:
Shallow Lagoon Foraging: Flamingos wade into the mineral-rich shallows, dipping their curved bills upside down to filter-feed on blue-green algae, spirulina, and small crustaceans.
Synchronized Flight Formations: At sunrise and dusk, flocks rise in tight V-formations across the water, their crimson underwings catching the amber desert sun against the silhouette of Beragarh Fort.
